What is AIA Contract Document C202-2015, Standard Form of Consultant’s Services: Geotechnical Engineering Services?
AIA Contract Document C202–2015 establishes the duties and responsibilities of a geotechnical engineer when hired as a consultant to a property owner. C202-2015 separates the geotechnical engineer’s services into four phases:
-
- explorations and testing,
- preparation of a geotechnical report,
- design phase services, and
- construction phase services.
In the first phase, the geotechnical engineer prepares a detailed plan of all explorations and tests and performs those explorations and tests according to specified requirements. The second phase includes a detailed list of items the geotechnical engineer will provide in the geotechnical report. The final two phases require the geotechnical engineer to consult with the owner and the owner’s other consultants during the design and construction of the project.
C202–2015 is a scope of services document only and may not be used as a stand-alone agreement. C202-2015 is intended to be attached as an exhibit to C103™–2015, Standard Form of Agreement Between Owner and Consultant without a Predefined Scope of Consultant’s Services.
Can C202-2015be used by itself?
No, C202-2015 is a scope of services document only and must be attached as an exhibit to C103-2015, Standard Form of Agreement Between Owner and Consultant without a Predefined Scope of Consultant’s Services.
What geotechnical engineering services are included in C202-2015?
C202-2015 requires the geotechnical engineer to provide field explorations and laboratory tests of the site soils conditions as necessary for the planning and design of the owner’s project. The geotechnical engineer then provides the owner with a geotechnical report, which summarizes the results of the field explorations and laboratory tests performed and also includes foundation recommendations for the project. During design and construction, the geotechnical engineer consults with the owner and the owner’s other consultants regarding geotechnical aspects of the project.
